SOGASCO '94 Year Group Extends Support to Communities Affected by Dam Spillage
BY EVA
The 1994 Year Group of Sogakope Secondary School Old Student Association (SOSA '94) has made a significant donation of relief items worth over GHC25,172 to communities impacted by the recent Akosombo Dam water spillage. The initiative aims to support those affected in areas such as Agave, Agorme, Godzeapota, Amuto, Tadze, and the alma mater, Sogakope Secondary School.
Contributions from the year group's members funded the relief items, which include used clothing, mosquito nets, mattresses, shoes, handbags, bags of sachet water, gari, washing powder, washing soap, and bathing soap. The donation was presented to community elders and opinion leaders to benefit the affected residents.
Dr. Godfred Amewu, the President of the Year Group, expressed concern about the devastation caused by the spillage, especially its impact on health needs. Notably, the challenging road network to the communities led to some relief items being transported across the Volta Lake to reach the affected areas. Dr. Amewu called on corporate entities to join in providing assistance to the affected communities.
In addition to supporting the affected communities, the year group also addressed the issue of drinking water at their alma mater. Recognizing the pollution of all drinking water sources, the group presented 200 bags of sachet water to Sogakope Senior High School. The Vice President of the year group, Sarah Yayra Dzitse, emphasized the importance of clean drinking water to prevent health issues on the school campus. The group plans to conduct tests on water samples and procure a suitable Reverse Osmosis (RO) system for the school, seeking sponsorship for installation as part of their 30th-anniversary celebrations in July 2024.
The consistent support of SOSA '94 has played a vital role in the academic and infrastructural development of Sogakope Secondary School, including career fairs, provision of computers and textbooks, construction projects, and recent renovations to the school's sick bay and guest house. The school's headmaster expressed gratitude for the group's ongoing contributions, recognizing them as a driving force in the school's progress.
